Awesome news!, I'm sure a lot of friends from our lovely BugSquad will join you folks that day. We're also planning an activity that day we want to organize an Ubuntu Bug Day based on the indicator-applet package, it's not going to require a lot of triage since the product is not that big instead would be nice to get more testing/bug filing, anyways i think that a good portion of our members here are willing to help you folks with that huge quantity of bugs there. Come on folks let's help the EduBuntu friends! if you have a few spare minutes that day please do consider on helping them, as Ben said they are also going to be around the #ubuntu-bugs channel if you have any questions ;-), Let's make the next Tuesday a *rocking* day. I upgraded my laptop to Lucid beta 2 today, in an attempt to test-drive it. It all worked fine until the system updated the kernel from 2.6.32-19 to 2.6.32-20. With *-20, it won't boot anymore. If anybody could give me some pointers so that I can investigate that problem further and file a bug report that is more specific than "computer says no", that would be very much appreciated. I'm happy to dive into the bowels of the OS if need be so don't hesitate to make it technical if required. The laptop in question is an IBM ThinkPad T42. The system seems to fail very early in the boot sequence, as if it didn't manage to recognise the disk, which may be part of the problem as I replaced the original HDD with an SSD when I upgraded to Karmic 6 months ago. I also upgraded the BIOS of the machine to its latest version today. I'm not sure whether that can have an impact. Message-ID: 2010/4/16, Oliver Sprinzl : > could someone be so nice and remove me from the Ubuntu Bug Squad Pendinag > approval list. Thanks. In fact, there is no such list. This list is really about "Discussion regarding how to report bugs, triage bugs and bug work flow. This is not the place to report bugs though questions about how to gather more detailed information about bugs are welcome." As said on: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugsquad You will also found at the end of this web page, how to unsubscribe. Discussions here are not common. Although we now see that quite a number of people are ready to do the steps to stay or become member of the Bug Squad. Since there is not much discussion, I would dare to share my hopeless feeling about this Squad. I would dare to say that most bugs gets fixed not because of bug reports, but because developers finish to discover them by themselves and fix them. It is like if there were so much bugs, that developers don't have time to look at them. And there is so many bugs, that we cannot follows at triaging them. Hopefully, there is tools like apport or 'System Testing' that make it more automatic to get the information needed. Maybe, we do not push enough bug information upstream to the real developer. But to know the bug is not because of an Ubuntu patch, means you know quite a bit about the source of a package. Sometime, I think there should be more teams of programmers and bug triagers working on a category of packages. Rather than to think that bug triaging is not so much technical than we can triage any bugs, I would say it request some know-how specific to each package. We cannot know about all packages. Triaging just one package might be too specific, and we would not have enough people to have 1 triager per package. But working in categories, maybe the same as Ubuntu Software Center would have the effect of grouping people sharing common interest, rather than people interested in Quality Assurance. Hopefully, grouping developers with triagers. I believe that each team would develop some know-how about 'there' packages. Much more than the current Bug Squad team. As it's a package with a small number of bugs, it looks ideal for a new triager, especially considering you know it well. In addition, this means that you are the ideal person to forward bugs upstream, which is great. I would also suggest you request a BugSquad mentor[1] of whom you can ask questions about triaging difficult bugs. Actually, there *is* such a list [1], it is split on active/proposed/former members. The OP was requesting his removal from the 'proposed' part of the list, and I then declined (removed) him. The OP request was, for all that matters, correct here. Right now there are no persons wanting to join, so the 'proposed' part will (probably) not be shown. And, by the way, this mailing list is the official ML for this team. > Discussions here are not common. I humbly disagree, and feel that many of the reported bugs come from the community-at-large, *not* from developers. Some bugs are indeed discovered by us ourselves ('us' meaning developers, maintainers, triagers, or power-users), but I do not think this will be the majority of the bugs, not even near. If it were not for the (few) triagers we have, we would be hopelessly behind (well, we *are* behind, but not hopelessly). > It is like if there were so much bugs, that developers > don't have time to look at them. And there is so many bugs, that we > cannot follows at triaging them. Hopefully, there is tools like apport > or 'System Testing' that make it more automatic to get the information > needed. Indeed. This is one of the reasons why triaging is so important: we need to validate the bug, collect data on how to reproduce it, try to reproduce it -- in summary, transform a collection of perhaps related, perhaps not, comments and attachments into something that allows a maintainer to zero in the issue, and decide on what to do. 'apport' helps a *lot* here, by: * analysing a backtrace, and looking for previous matches * collecting configuration data, logs, etc that -- per the developers/maintainers -- would probably help on solving the issue. This, BTW, is a point where we need help: there are many packages without an apport hook to collect data. But it does not collect a "how to reproduce" recipe. This is where triaging kicks in. System Testing is a larger process, still being developed. But it certainly can help in identifying common failures, and much more. > Maybe, we do not push enough bug information upstream to the real > developer. But to know the bug is not because of an Ubuntu patch, > means you know quite a bit about the source of a package. We cannot push a bug upstream if we do not know it is: (a) a real bug; (b) not caused by us; (c) without enough data for upstream to work on it. We still need triaging. *Most* of the times we do not carry local changes -- we try to maintain the delta (i.e., the difference between our packages and the upstream source) as small as possible. Most of the packages do not have local changes, and some carry upstream fixes, cherry-picked from the upstream source (and so are vailid for upstreaming). But I agree that it will not be easy, for someone that has no exposure to code, to wade thru a complex package (for example, libc6). Still, the issue *must* be verified to exist. A triager does not need to get down to the code: one can only go as far as one can. After that, somebody else must carry it. On the other hand, trying to find the code path is widely considered a good way to learn about the package (if one wants to be a maintainer/developer). > Sometime, I think there should be more teams of programmers and bug > triagers working on a category of packages. I believe that each team > would develop some know-how about 'there' packages. Much more than the > current Bug Squad team. I agree: we do need more triaging, and triaging is always better when specialised -- I might be a good triager for, say, Evolution, but I would suck to high heaven if I tried to triage sound issues. There *are* some projects on this, for upstream [2] and locally [3], and anyone can join. The more coverage the better. All packages should be contemplated for adoption. After all, it all must revolve around the community. *WE* are part of the community, and certainly more involved with Ubuntu. Some of us are developers, some power-users, some just plain users, with no knowledge of programming. We all help. And we *need* help. ..C.. During alpha and beta, the version of gthumb was 2.11.2 but it was decided that it is not stable enough and to revert back to the version in karmic (2.10.11). So now the version is "2.11.2.1.is.2.10.11". There are a couple of bug reports against 2.11.2 which do not apply to 2.10 (many of them are marked as regressions). What would be the correct bug status if the problem does not occur with the currently shipped version? Simply "invalid", or "fix released"? From a user perspective, the latest package update (i.e. downgrade) fixed the bug, but "invalid" seems more natural to me. I'm sorry that the bug reporting experience was a frustrating one. > 1) The file /etc/default/update-motd dose not exit on my system, > and the package is not installed. This was a red herring and my mistake, that file was leftover on my system from a previous release. Sorry about that. > a. Why is the system still acting like the package is installed? apt-cache show update-motd tells us: Description: superceded by pam_motd in libpam-modules . This package installs a script in /etc/profile.d that dynamically generates a message-of-the-day by running scripts installed in /etc/update-motd.d, in lexical order. . Other packages, or system administrators should symlink scripts into /etc/update-motd.d, pre-pending a 2-digit number to handle ordering. . The functionality formerly provided by this package is now integrated into pam_motd, in libpam-modules. > b. How is it configured? > c. How do I turn it off? Further information about how it can be configured can be found by using 'man update-motd'. It looks like you can remove some of those scripts or add your own. > 2) This seem to be a similar problem as > https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/lucid/update-motd/luc > id and it appears that this has not been fully removed, but seems closed > as if completed. I believe I said that update-motd was "superceded by pam_motd in libpam-modules". The right way forward would be: apt-cache policy libpam-modules This will show you whether or not the package is installed. You may want to try this with a new profile as well, just in case. You can do so by running 'firefox -P' and creating a new profile (no need to delete your default one). If the crash still happens, then please file the report. If it stops, then the crash is likely due to a setting or extension. If Firefox is crashing, then apport may be able to catch it and generate a report. Apport has been turned off by default now, but you can activate it if you edit /etc/default/apport so that enabled=1. Then, restart your computer and reproduce the crash. If apport doesn't automatically tell you it generated a crash report, then go to /var/crash and look for a .crash report for Firefox. Double clicking that report will start apport which will get all of the info needed to report the bug. If you can't get a crash report, then the backtrace is a good start. Just use 'ubuntu-bug firefox' and attach the backtrace when you're filing the report. Hope this helps!
