However, because it is so important and read by everyone, it is adapted frequently. This resulted in a full page, and makes it hard to find the right information and the right section for adding new information. I've restructured the whole page and rewritten some sections to make it easier to read and extend. Message-ID: <1251245245.8116.59.camel@xango2> All, Have you ever had sound problems on Ubuntu (and Linux, in general)? Have you ever lost the *critical* piece, that would make the whole conversation understandable, to static? Have you -- like my humble self -- considered the plethora of sound-related pieces a gigantic maze, with no rules known? Not that not knowing the rules would matter, since they seem to change continuously... Do you -- again, like my humble self -- get surprised when sounds *does* work? If all of the above, or even a single one, applies to you... then YOU can help! We are about to go on a Class About Sound [1]. Daniel T Chen has graciously accepted a request from Bug-Control, and will be giving a class on how to _triage_ sound bugs. Given that sound bugs have been a major user experience headache, triaging sound bugs is, I believe, a major roadblock for us [2]. So, it is set! We will have a "Triaging Sound Bugs" next Friday -- courtesy of Daniel, and the magnificent folks that manage the Ubuntu Classroom IRC channel. Date: Friday, August 28th, at 22:00 UTC Location: irc.ubuntu.org, channel #ubuntu-classroom Duration: 90 minutes (estimated) Presenter: Daniel T Chen (IRC: dtchen) Thank you. I do hope a lot of us get to be there -- we do need the help! Cheers, ..Carl.. [3] IRC: hggdh p.s. A *HUGE* THANK YOU to Daniel, for giving up yet another hour of his life to help us. And, of course, to the -classroom folks, for allowing us to use the channel. p.p.s. I do apologise for this late announcement, but... such is life. ------------ [1] Unfortunately, just the sound bugs triaging part, right now. Before we get sound really, *really* working, we must understand what is broken. Then, with the help of correctly triaged bugs, we can work out the failures, and get Sound Working As It Should (TM). On the other hand, if you get to understand how to triage sound issues, you will probably have far less issues with sound ;-) [2] please keep in mind that one can only *solve* a problem after: (1) understanding *what* is the problem (if any at all); (2) finding *how* the problem manifests itself; (3) finding *where* the problem lies. Amazingly enough for some people, this all depends on a correct triage. [3] As luck would have it, I will, myself, be absent: at this time I will be traveling home, after a week's work. I would like to ask for a moderator, to field questions to Daniel. Please email me, or IRC me, this week, so we can set it up. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... In effect, this changes is a revert, the source package was named 'ffmpeg' in hardy, our last LTS, which would leave us with 2 releases (intrepid and jaunty) with that 'funny' discontinuity. Regarding bug tracking, I've had the experience that the source package name 'ffmpeg-debian' is not intutive at all, and people just file bugs against 'ffmpeg'. Not reverting this rename will not stop them to do so, since the old entry 'ffmpeg' will not go away for earlier releases of this package. Having the package named back will direct ffmpeg related bug reports to the right place. AFAIUI we both agree that 'ffmpeg-extra' is the best name for the source package with the '-extra-' binary packages, and should not be renamed back to 'ffmpeg'. I expect not having any source package called 'ffmpeg' in the most recent release of ubuntu will be confusing. In some way, yes, I've learned my lesson that source package renames need to be considered harmful the hard way. Well, - users ought to use apport to file bug reports, which would catch this - I think LP should disallow filing bug reports against the default distribution for packages that aren't present in that distribution. The focus of the bug day will be bugs that were marked Incomplete but have since received a response. Each kernel team member is responsible for a specific subset of bugs however community involvement is also greatly appreciated. The kernel team would like to thank Andres Mujica for helping triage all 50 bugs in the community section last time. Keep up the great work Andres! Please join us Tuesday in the #ubuntu-kernel IRC channel on FreeNode as we tackle this list of bugs together. Thanks in advance, Leann [1] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/BugDay/20090901 From trulyliu at gmail.com Sat Aug 22 02:30:12 2009 From: trulyliu at gmail.com (trulyliu) Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2009 02:30:12 -0000 Subject: string comparison bug of bash on Ubuntu 9.04 i386 Message-ID: <4caecb850908211930g2a0ac760k3b0f354f150fd194@mail.gmail.com> qingchengl at T61:/tmp$ cat /etc/issue Ubuntu 9.04 \n \l qingchengl at T61:/tmp$ uname -a Linux T61 2.6.28-15-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 29 08:54:56 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux qingchengl at T61:/tmp$ bash --version GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (i486-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc. qingchengl at T61:/tmp$ cat run.sh #!/bin/bash echo "Input filename: $1" BOUNDARY='-----------------------------=.3943144700514' if [ ! -f $1 ]; then echo "File $1 doesn't exist" fi echo "${BOUNDARY}" while read line do echo "${line}" # this string comparison never return true, I have tried double bracket and double = # This script run normally on Debian 4.01 if [ "${line}" = "${BOUNDARY}" ]; then echo "found start boundary" fi done < $1 qingchengl at T61:/tmp$ cat ipfile -----------------------------=.3943144700511 -----------------------------=.3943144700512 -----------------------------=.3943144700513 -----------------------------=.3943144700514 qingchengl at T61:/tmp$ ./extract.sh ./ipfile Input filename: ./ipfile -----------------------------=.3943144700514 -----------------------------=.3943144700511 -----------------------------=.3943144700512 -----------------------------=.3943144700513 -----------------------------=.3943144700514 -- trulyliu at gmail.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Ah - damned if we do, damned if we don't, then. Well, - users ought to use apport to file bug reports, which would catch this - I think LP should disallow filing bug reports against the default distribution for packages that aren't present in that distribution. But those are both long-term things, I guess. :) > Is there anything I need to do to get the 'ffmpeg' package promoted to > 'main' or is this discussion the blocker for its promotion?
