Look inside your menus in the terminal.  Does it say "s" where the
keyboard shortcut should be on any of them?  GNOME lets you remap
keyboard shortcuts by highlighting a menu item and hitting a key or
key combination.  I accidentally remapped "new terminal" to space or
enter or something one time.
