Hello folks!

I'm a relatively new addition to the Ubuntu bug squad as well as this
mailing list, so please go easy on me if I'm being silly. :-)

The reason why I'm posting this is because when reviewing untriaged
bugs today, I noticed that some of the bugs on "last" page were over a
year old! Given the huge number of untriaged bugs, would it be prudent
to advise folks to start triaging bugs oldest to youngest? If so, then
perhaps the appropriate BugSquad triaging wiki pages should also be
changed.

Just a thought...

P.S. Happy 2007 everyone!

Rouben

Well this is a compromise. Taking a look at older bugs is definitely needed
but we wouldn't want to miss on important new issues that affect the next
release. imVho, I think that the best approach is to focus mainly on new bugs
but dedicate some time to old bugs as well. After all, if an old bug is very
important, it won't be forgotten because sooner or later a duplicate will appear :-)

Hello,

Over the Christmas break, Launchpad stopped sending bug notification
emails.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused you. We've found
the bug responsible and will have the fix rolled out by Thursday (4th Jan).

We have pretty good quality control but obviously it wasn't thorough
enough for us to catch this bug before the Christmas holiday. We're now
reviewing how we test changes to Launchpad and will implement a new QA
process for the bug mail system.

I'm glad to say that no data was lost. You may not receive notification
of all bug changes straight away, though, as we are currently looking at
the best way to process the backlog.

Again, I'm sorry that we haven't given you the service you expect.

If you have any questions, please reply to this email or find me in
#launchpad on irc.freenode.net.

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm pleased to say that Launchpad's bug status notification emails are
now flowing again!

We've started to send out the backlog of bug notifications. When you
receive them, you may notice that there is one email per bug, no matter
how many status changes there have been. To reduce the number of emails
you receive, we have collated all the information about one bug into the
same email.

I'm sorry that we haven't given you the service that we should. As a
result of the problem, we have now improved our quality control.

If you have any questions, please email me or find me in #launchpad on

Good to see the issue reported is already resolved. Could you set the
"Bug Contact" and "Driver" of 'bughelper' to 'bugsquad'?

Yeah, I've been using it a bit today to have a go a grub-related bugs in
ubiquity. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/DupCandidates

I feel a bit bad about hammering Launchpad via HTTP (until I remember
that they still need to send us some XML sample files :) -- Matthew?)

Being able to output and input again a list of bug numbers to bughelper
would alleviate much this. Example: first do a search for 'GrubInstaller
failed with code 1' then search those (including attachments) for 'The
file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly', say.

I've started a wishlist page here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugHelper/Dev/WishList

I would like to announce the formation of a new triage/development team.
The Mozillateam can be found at https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam.

Let's get some folks together who are interested in triaging Firefox and
friends for Ubuntu.

At https://bugs.launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+packagebugs we have over 800
open issue reports. Ouch. Maybe the world renowned bugsquad can throw
some love our way next bugday.

A request ticket is in for some mailing lists; ubuntu-mozillateam and
ubuntu-mozillateam-bugs. We will have a place to discuss all of those
pesky details that keep popping up.

IRC ubuntu-mozillateam

Wiki pages are underway at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam.

Please think of this as mozillateam-0.01 releasing early and releasing
often.

Thanks,
David

Hello everybody,

as I mentioned before [1], I wanted to start working on implementing the
new clue files format [2] for bughelper and a good part of the work has
landed in ~dholbach/bughelper/bughelper.dev

What currently works is combinations of and, or, not and the general
parsing of XML files. The old info.old format is obsolete now.

What NOT works is: inheritance of bug clues (although they are parsed
already) and 'general clues', where we'll need to think of altering the
format a bit.

We should start working on documentation, so we can start using it for
real life bug triage soon.

Once someone has reviewed the changes, please merge into
~bugsquad/bughelper/bughelper.main

Daniel,
I'd really like to help you with this because I think it can
be very helpful for bug triaging. Unfortunately, I don't
have the skills to start working on it and there are things
that I don't understand quite well.

Since that is probably happening to more people (the lack of
responses to your several calls for help seems to confirm this)
I was wondering if you would mind to make an #ubuntu-classroom
meeting to teach us by example... wdyt?

- I made the last comment -- If I combine this with a date I can find those bugs where I requested more info but got no reply
- The submitter made the last comment -- The sumbitter has provided more info but no one has replied to her
- The package maintainer -- May have said something very wise about abut that I want to read

Public bug reported:

I would be useful to get bug # output as a list of plain numbers, HTML
formatted URLs or Wiki links on the form {{{[http://url bug #<num>]}}}
for easy cut and paste to the wiki.

bughelper should also be able to read these files as input. That way you
can work on a subset of bugs and then narrow it down further with
different searches, add remove bugs manually from the list or email it
to someone for further analysis.

Public bug reported:

Some clues are very common across all packages. You may want to search
for bugs with core dumps, screenshots, filed by a certain person,
whatever.

This can be solved by inheritance into a bug clue file, but that
requires that file to exist and the include statement to be there. With
truly global clues I could type:

bughelper -c g_core_dump gok

to find all the bugs in which gok caused a core dump, without there even
being a clue file for gok. a global.info clue file would suffice.

Public bug reported:

It would be useful to be able to read in local clue files in addition to
or instead of the bundled ones.

Many triagers will use bughelper in a semi-interactive way, inventing
clues as they go along sifting bugs. Some of these may be generally
useful, others not.

bughelper -r mycluefile.info packagename

could read the contents of my clue file and process it together with the
standard one for the package, while

-R mycluefile.info

would use only that local clue file and skip the standard one.

This would also allow for a fairly efficient and tidy way of adding to
the global bug info data. Once a triages has made a clue or set of clues
that he/she thinks might be useful to others it can be uploaded as an
attachment to a bug in malone for bughelper and the maintainers can roll
it in at their leisure.

Thanks a lot for the assessment. I'm very happy if this proves to be

In general: Please ask all your questions on the list, because everybody
will read them and we'll have answers which are archived for everybody.

I'm happy to do that. We can try to do a focused Q&A session on IRC on
Thursday Jan 18th on #ubuntu-bugs on irc.freenode.net at 15:00 UTC.
Please bear in mind that bughelper is still at a VERY early stage and
that things you'd like to have in it are not even thought of yet. I'm
convinced that this session will probably help out to
      * understand where we are
      * how things work that are implemented already
      * which way we'll go in the future
      * which documentation we still need to write
      * where spots for involvement are
      * what processes we need for development

Please try to think of good questions and answers in advance and let's
have a productive meeting!

Have a nice day,
 Daniel

I suppose it'd be better to split this up in separate bug reports.

Things worth noting nonetheless:
 * we need some sort of command line interface for this
 * <before dapper> might be a bit tricky to solve, as we now still have people running breezy and filing bugs. we might just say "ok, dapper was released on ..... - all bugs after that date are 'dapper bugs'", which should be fine for the majority I guess
 * file types meaning the file extension (*.jpg) or a content-type (text/plain), both?

Thanks for the suggestion.

This would need the 'clue nick' to be implemented.

Public bug reported:

The command line parsing in ./bugHelper/commandLine.py is pretty naïve
at the moment. We need to port it to something sane to make the code
maintainable.

Things we can investigate:
 - native python support for doing that
 - glib python bindings (think GOption in C)
 - something else.

Hello everybody,

as bughelper is growing and feature requests are coming up, which is a
*very* good sign, we need somebody to take care of the command line
interface.

I started writing https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugHelper/Dev/CommandLineZoo
to try to make sense out of what we have today and what we want soon.

It'd be great if somebody of you stepped up and thought about what we
could do to improve the future user experience of bughelper. We need a
Command Line Visionary to make the use consistent and approve and
consider future command line switches.

I also filed an RFE bug to fix up the command line parsing, which is
pretty wonky at the moment: https://launchpad.net/bughelper/+bug/79215

Have a nice day,
 Daniel

I just wrote https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugHelper/Dev which links to the
information we have, also I added a couple of processes which we could
discuss during the meeting. Hopefully they are not too bureaucratic and
will just help with what we do.

See you in the meeting,

suggest we use docbook to write them and build man pages from them
during the package build process.

./README in the branch ~bugsquad/bughelper/bughelper.main should have
enough information already - it just needs to be written up. To get an
idea of docbook for manpages run:

apt-get source kxmame; cd kxmame-*; less debian/kxmame.1.docbook

Public bug reported:

I envision bugxml doing this in the future:

bugxml -sa totem "libxine.so" "This is probably a libxine problem. Ask
the user to check if xine-ui has the same problem."

The tool would then
 * check if ./packages/totem.info exists
 * if not, check for ./totem.info
 * if one of them exists, add <clue><op>libxine.so</op><info>This is probably a libxine problem. Ask the user to check if xine-ui has the same problem.</info></clue> nodes below the <clues> node.
 * if not, create a new file.

This of course only handles the simple cases, but it'd be a good
improvement for our workflow.

Your suggestion of
   bughelper -r <package>.info
has the advantage that you don't have to type the package name. I'm wondering if it might be easy to mix up he files though. Perhaps the extension should show clearly that is a new/custom file in some standard way? <package>.newinfo or .myinfo

Not sure how the directory option would work. There would have to be
only one .info file in there or bughelper would use them all the first
one / random one.

docs/tutorial/adding-clues, docs/tutorial/using-bughelper,

things I can already think of.

I suggest assuming /usr/share/bughelper/packages as the global clue file
location (if the package is installed), then maybe check the "/packages"
directory relative to where the currently run bughelper script resides.

I don't see any trouble mixing them up.

> Not sure how the directory option would work.

We would
 * first check os.path.isfile(sys.argv[x]) then use the given .info file
 * then check os.path.isdir(sys.argv[x]) and use all the files in that directory
 * then check glob.glob(sys.argv[x]) and go through the list of possible matches.

> There would have
> to be only one .info file in there or bughelper would use them

I don't quite understand why we would need this. bughelper knows which
source package a given bug belongs to, so it can easily check if there's
a .info file for that bug.

Good idea. We need command line switches for that. Can you think of what

Subject: [bughelper] Reaching Out
Message-ID: <1168781266.5418.32.camel@lovegood>

Hello everybody,

I want to point your attention to http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugHelper - an
initiative by the BugSquad to help with bug triage and ease tasks
related to it.

While the code in ~bugsquad/bughelper/bughelper.main [1] does not do
that much yet, there are a lot of improvements and enhancements planned
already [2]. We'll have a meeting to discuss the future of the tool soon
[3].

[1] https://launchpad.net/~bugsquad/+branch/bughelper/bughelper.main
[2] http://launchpad.net/bughelper/+bugs
[3] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-bugsquad/2007-January/000236.html

The reasons for reaching out to you are many-sided: I personally think
that it might help you a lot with your daily bug work, but there are a
couple of implications this will have. I'd also like to ask you for your
opinion, help, comments (ubuntu-bugsquad@ list and BugHelper wiki) and
bugs (bug reports on the bughelper product).

Now I'd like to address a few of you directly:

      * Bjorn, Stuart: as long as we don't have XML dumps for Malone
data, yet we'll be parsing HTML output. It's clear, that this
means workload on Malone - if you should witness problems with
that, please let us know and we'll try to work-around or plan
        differently.
      * Bjorn: it'd be great to hear your views on the project
        specifically.
      * Bjorn, Matthew (mpt): if the look of Malone should change, we
probably need to adapt the regular expressions in
        BugHelper/HTMLOperations.py
      * Matthew (mpt): if you have the time and could give us a follow
up on [4], that'd be great. It's about making user experience of
        the command line interface consistent.
      * People from the Documentation Team: we already have a short
tutorial [5], an overview over the capabilities [6] and some
bugs tagged as 'documentation' [7]. If somebody of you could
check how they sane they are and help us out a bit, that'd be
        awesome.

Message-ID: <1168781644.5418.37.camel@lovegood>

Hello everybody,

I tagged a few bughelper bugs as 'bitesize' [1]. These are meant to be
easy and a good start to help us out. Just branch of
~bugsquad/bughelper/bughelper.main [2] and start hacking on your own
branch. Find information on using bzr here [3].

[2] https://launchpad.net/~bugsquad/+branch/bughelper/bughelper.main

Your help will change a lot and we hope to have a friendly crew of
bughelper hackers together soon, which will help Ubuntu tremenduously
with the increasing amount of bug triage work.

Thanks a lot,
 Daniel

Subject: [bughelper] mail volume on ubuntu-bugsquad list
Message-ID: <1168782267.5418.42.camel@lovegood>

Hello everybody,

In the last two days, I noticed a few people unsubscribing from the
ubuntu-bugsquad list. I can only guess that it's related due to the
increased mail volume regarding the bughelper project.

Personally, I will prepend all my mails with [bughelper] now, to make it
easy to filter them to another folder or get rid of them, if you prefer
to do that.

For the moment I don't want to take bughelper of the BugSquad mailing
list, because I think the input from BugSquad people is crucial to the
beginning of bughelper. Also I hope that all of you will start helping
out soon:

      * Either with hacking and improving bughelper directly
      * or writing and improving .info files.

I can only ask for your patience and hope you bear with us in the
starting phase of bughelper.

Thanks a lot. Have a nice day,
 Daniel

Public bug reported:

bughelper should know which version it is. This information is useful
for debugging bughelper problems.

Invoked with -V it should either return
 * the bzr revision (parse bzr log , bonus points for using bzrlib directly)
 * the version of the installed package (parse dpkg -l ), if it is no branch.

IMHO, it seems that we'll need many command line options to deal with
all this criteria properly. Maybe an interactive helper agent (like a
shell) will make things easier to use.

We don't need IA like behaviour yet, but it should be probably the way
to go, and eventually even launchpad could benefit from this tool, e.g.
trying to find dupes before new bugs are filed, helping to find existing
bugs easily, etc.

And we'll need a name for that agent, of course ;)

This tool searches through bugs and tries to find matches with data in .info
files. It has the same functionality and switches as 'bugnumbers´. In addition
to that it accepts

'-A´ which lets it search through all the bug attachments with the mime type
 text/plain.

Examples:
   bugnumbers -a evolution
   bugnumbers -A -l https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gcalctool/+bugs

shouldn't the example be 'bughelper' instead of 'bugnumbers' ?

Right, so I can confirm this. It's broken with the -l URL switch. The

In the meantime, plain 'bughelper -A ubiquity' works for me. Have you

I'll dig into this tomorrow.
For now, I suspect a problem in ./bugHelper/HTMLOperations.py trying to determine which source package is affected, if the package has more than one bug task.

We should probably make sure that if more than one package is affected,
all <package>.info files are considered.

we should probably discuss what goals we want to achieve for 0.1 - which
should be as a package in Ubuntu too. Henrik: can you create that
milestone in Launchpad, so we can track bugs for that?

I suggest we:
      * fix and polish documentation,
      * fix grave bugs (like bug 79247),
      * our 'bitesize tasks',
      * the 'simple add' option and
      * of course: add some initial .info files

With goals like that, I guess we'll be ready to go in February.

Have a nice day,
 Daniel

It would output <a href="URL">Bug # and title</a><br /> in to out.html.

I could then just click on the output file and it would open in firefox.
I then Ctrl-Click on all the links and off I go triaging at speed :)

Using bzrlib is probably easier than parsing the bzr log output:

from bzrlib.bzrdir import BzrDir

revision = BzrDir.open(pathToBranchDir).open_branch().revno()

I'll have a go at hacking on this tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a good holiday! Now that you are rested and
cheerful, perhaps you'd consider joining us for an Ubuntu Bug Day? As
usual, we'll be meeting for all of Wednesday in the #ubuntu-bugs IRC
channel on irc.freenode.net.

We've released Feisty Fawn's second milestone [1] and we're going to be
testing it this Wednesday. Feel free to download some images, burn them
to CDs, and give Feisty a test drive.

As well, we'll be processing more applications for the Ubuntu QA [2]
team, That's the team you join after working with the BugSquad for a
while and want to contribute further. Its webpage gives guidelines on
how to join.

For more information, take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBugDay
which has links to more details.

The regular expression was wrong indeed and it was a simple fix (using the non-greedy matching):
- titleFilter = '<title>Bug #[0-9]* in (.*) .*: .*'
+ titleFilter = '<title>Bug #[0-9]* in (.*?) .*: .*'

I found some other bugs related to reading and evaluating the clue
files. Some might be related to the change from python2.4 to python2.5
(?).

If somebody can tell me, why I need to do the following check in infoFiles.py, I'd be happy to chuck it out again, it looks like a hack to me:
        if type(condition) == types.TupleType:
[....]

I committed the change to my bzr branch - somebody please review and
merge into ~bugsquad/bughelper/bughelper.main

Output is now:

I've been playing a little with regular expressions and finally added
some "print" calls to see what's happening and I found that the problem
isn't with bug 26827. Actually, the problem is bug 77442, which has
several source packages listed. If you fetch
https://launchpad.net/bugs/77442 the title shows the problem:

  <title>Bug #77442 in vnc (Ubuntu): ...

Since there's different source packages for this bug there's also the
change to get a different name each time, depending on the fetching
method and LP behaviour. It seems that the last source package is
listed, but I could be wrong (maybe we should ask LP developers).

https://code.launchpad.net/~dsas/+branch/bughelper/bughelper.dev should
have the relevant fix (revision 21).

It's my first real time using python, so it probably wants a careful
review. I used python-apt to get the current revision number rather than
parse dpkg -l. though I can alter to do that if its preferred.

Thanks a lot for your work on that! Great work.

Some things, I'd like to comment on:
 * usage of tabs vs. spaces: I used spaces throughout bughelper and it'd be nice if we could stick to that. It doesn't make python happy if both occur in mixed ways. python -tt <file> can help to find problems related to that.
 * I moved the "find_version_string()" function to bugHelper/utils.py - to keep commandLine.py command line related - hope that's ok with you.
 * When I wrote the bug, I didn't think about how lonely "bughelper 21" would look, so I search setup.py for the current version number and add "r<revision>" to it - hope that makes sense to everybody. If there's a cleverer way, please fix my attempt.

Thanks for your good work - if you could have a look at
~dholbach/bughelper/bughelper.dev and read the diff, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again!

Seems OK to me, but have a question:

> check os.path.isdir(sys.argv[x]) and use all the files in that
directory

Should that directory be traversed recursively or doesn't make sense to
have a package tree of clue files? A quick find for any *.info files
there would be easy to get if there's some "find" module for Python.

(I'm a Perl programmer, so don't tell anybody that I'm doing some Python
here ;)

I don't think that having '-k' for 'count' is user-friendly enough. We
should look at other tools that could have similar options or use long
ones, as in GNU:

  --count=5
  --count=">5"
  --count="<5"
  --count-verbose=5
  ...

In the long term, long option names is far easier to maintain when
there's so many options to deal with.

os.walk() is easy to use - we can do recursively, although, as you say,
it probably won't make much sense (yet).

Checking all the source packages involved should work now.

I agree that we are probably better off starting with verbose switches

To clarify was that in the command you originally listed:

bughelper -r <dir>

you omitted the package name which would only make sense if there was
only one clue file in that dir.

bughelper -r <dir> packagename

would be correct. Other than that, I'm happy :)

Ok, an example of what I thought:

bughelper -r gcalctool.info
        (that should be clear enough)
bughelper -r test_packages/
(which contains metacity.info, xserver-xorg.info and beryl.info, should be clear enough too)

I don't see why we need the <packagename> argument.

So in your first example bughelper to look up stuff on gcalctool, using
the file you provided.

In the second example it would process all three packages in one single
run. If that's the behaviour you intended then that's fine. I guess that
was the whole point :)

It does mean that you cannot use 'my-really-cool-clue-file-
version3.info' though, which is probably just as well.

I've done the first part in r26 of my branch
(~dsas/bughelper/bughelper.dev).

I'm not sure if python-apt has a "search cache for string" function, I
couldn't find one but it's easy to iterate through the apt cache and do
it, just thought a python-apt way may be more efficient.

Done in r28 of my branch ~dsas/bughelper/bughelper.dev This should be
quicker too, we're using the existing apt cache rather than creating a
new one...I think (python-apt docs are nonexistent).

The same fix could be done for bug #79231. I'll probably do that tonight
or tomorrow unless someone beats me to it.

Hello everybody,

I just talked a big to Diogo Matsubara - for those who don't know him
yet: he's Launchpad hacker extraordinaire. He was kind enough to follow
the bughelper discussion and look a bit at our code. He said he'd
recommend two things to us:

      * Sticking to PEP 8 (http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/)
        when doing reviews.
      * Doing Test Driven Development.

I don't know much about TDD, so if anybody has expertise there, let's
try to change our workflow.

But more importantly: About PEP-8: I'm happy to try to stick to that. If
anybody wants to PEP-8-ify my python code, he's happy to do so. I'd call
my Python code dirty as well - no offense taken. :-)

Have a nice day,
 Daniel

surely forcing people to have deb-src lines is a bad thing (commented or

Thanks a lot Fernando: awesome work. I committed a modified version to
~dholbach/bughelper/bughelper.dev - please everybody test and check.

Some minor nitpicks:
 - please use an indentation level of 4 spaces (PEP-8 wants that too and we use it throughout)
 - please makes lines only max. 79 chars long
 - I added your name to the contributors list instead of adding it to the header file and also mentioned you in the commit log - I hope that's ok for you
 - and also changed the variable names in a few places to make it more consistent

One change I committed with this change is Sébastien's request to drop
the '-a' option. We do '--all' pages by default now.

(The command line options changed in a few places as well - please take
care of that in the documentation - Alex Muntada?)

Thanks again Fernando - nice work.

Turning into a 0.1 bug. It's nice for people who have bughelper
installed as a package and add local clues as they go along.

I'm not sure we need a new XML tag though.
~/bughelper/packages/totem.info should be 'just added' to the clues of
/usr/share/bughelper/packages/totem.info.

Any opinions on this?

Hello everybody,

I just committed a patch to ~dholbach/bughelper/bughelper.dev which
saves bug attachments (with content-type text/plain) to
~/.bughelper/attachments-cache/, so they're not downloaded over and over
again.

I'd appreciate it, if somebody of the team reviewed the patch and

Well done, Luca.

I'd personally just change the "please create a new one using bugxml
command" to "consult bugxml(1) on how to create one" or "check README on
how to create on".

Let's take totem as an example: if you check it with bughelper you will
find that some of its bugs have tasks open on xserver-xorg-video-i810
and others. You're not necessarily always in the position to write a
.info file on that.

Does that make sense?

I thought I'd take a stab at this one. The easiest part to implement
seemed to be changing the output format, so that's all that this patch
includes. It's currently in this form:

bughelper [--version]
     bughelper [-A] [--format=<plain|html|wiki>] [-p <source package>]
     bughelper [-A] [--format=<plain|html|wiki>] [-l <Launchpad-URL>]

It now outputs in these forms:
<a href="http://launchpad.net/bugs/43050">Bug 43050 </a> - Vino crasher bugs<br />
{{{[http://launchpad.net/bugs/43050 bug #43050] - Vino crasher bugs}}}
http://launchpad.net/bugs/43050 - Vino crasher bugs

I'm sure the patch needs more work done, but I'm putting it out here in case anyone's looking for a starting point on this one.

Hello folks!

I'm stuck with a bug (# 51609) and don't know how to proceed. The bug
started out as a translation bug, the catch is, however, that the
reporter is volunteering to correct the error. The problem? Adept
(package in question) is not registered with Rosetta. After some
wiki-ing, I figured that contacting the product registrant is the best
way to ask them to register the package with Rosetta... so, I tried
contacting the product registrant as well as anyone who is remotely
associated with Adept, but to no avail, I have yet to receive a
response.

Should I refer this issue upstream back to the KDE project? What is
the proper course of action in a case like this?

Thanks!

Rouben

Hi,

I think it would be best if the reporter talked to upstream. Not everybody uses Rosetta.
Point the reporter upstream since others will benefit from the changes as well. Of course
my opinion is by no means authoritative :-)

You can contact the upstream on behalf of the reporter. What I see
usually is that the triager opens a bug report at upstream, refers to
the LP url, and tells upstream what the original reporter is
experiencing. Then you'll have to coordinate between the launchpad bug
report and the upstream bug report.

This way, you don't force your users to go out of their ways to fix
something.

It's also good to contact rosetta people (CC'ing), they might offer
better help than us.
Thanks.

Good afternoon,

I have started to triag bug #78539,
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/78539, which talks about problems
mounting USB devices. The orginial requestor has mentioned the problem
only occurs when inserting a flash drive when logged in as root. I am
wondering since root is disabled by default if this is a bug that we need
to worry about or not?

Thanks,

After figuring out how to get my own bzr branch and playing a little
with docbook manual pages, I finally have a working version available
in: ~alex.muntada/bughelper/bughelper.dev

Could someone review and merge it into main branch?

To produce the bughelper.1 manpage you'll need the docbook2x package and
run something like this:

cd debian && docbook2x-man bughelper.1.docbook && man ./bughelper.1

Now, I'd like to know if the bugxml and bugnumbers pages should be kept
separately or you think that it's fine to put them in the same file and
install them as symlinks (still dunno how to do it, but I'll find if
needed).

Dean, I asked in #bzr because I had created an external branch from the
website; those external branches cannot be updated through sftp (it's a
known bug), so I was suggested to rename the branch and set the product
to "obsolete-junk".

I just did and then published my branch as you said (it didn't work
before), so my changes are now avaible and ready for review.

Good work, Alex! We just need manpages for bugxml also (maybe not for
bugnumers *shrug*).

We also need this bit.

I already answered in the bug report.

Btw, yeah, in the future, is a good thing to contact us if you have any
problem with translations in Ubuntu.

Cheers.

Good work on that Andrew. What do you think about splitting out the
'printing' to another 'module'? I'd love to keep the bughelper script as
easy to understand as possible.

Also... what do you think about writing the file directly out to the disk?
So that'd be
   bughelper -A --format=wiki -p evolution
rather than:
   bughelper -A --format=wiki -p evolution > evolution.wiki
for our users. Any other opinions?

For statistical information, about the quantity of bugs per package, it
would be helpful to have bugnumbers return a count of the number of bugs
rather than bug numbers. Additionally a subcount by status would be
helpful.

Public bug reported:

At the moment you can negate only simple text conditions, but not
complete <and> or <or> conditions.

Fixing this would require changes to XMLOperations.py and and to
infoFiles.py - while the changes required are probably just a couple of
one line fixes, I suppose it will take a bit of time to figure out.

Public bug reported:

Apparently, a lot of people use bughelper, but few of them actually
contribute clue files to us.

One suggestion was to let bughelper log its command-line, the
appropriate clue files, and its output. Then they can be sent to
someone else to extract the useful clues and distribute them.

Design constraints include easy parsing of the logs, not sending the
logs automatically, and making it easy to expire old logs.

Not really. This is the bug asking for people to do usability testing
and changing the command-line options themselves.

For instance, it covers removing the -l option and making bughelper
smarter about URL parsing.

Hello everybody,

I just committed a bunch of changes to bughelper, which give it a
--minbug option. Thanks a lot Colin for working on this. He also helped
fixing some quirkiness in the and/or/not conditions code.

./bughelper -m 75000 -p ubiquity
will now only consider ubiquity bugs from bugnumber 75000 on.

If you see Colin running along, thank him for that.

Have a nice day,
 Daniel

Public bug reported:

We will want to build tools on top of bughelper, some of which may not
be written in Python. Wouldn't it be nice if bughelper could export the
complete results of its screenscraping as a machine-parsable output
file? I suggest XML, but am not tied to it.

Public bug reported:

There have been requests for a GUI to bughelper. Henrik suggested that
we build a web application that wraps bughelper and runs queries on
behalf of a user. Output would be displayed as a web page, which may
depend on implementing bug 81289.

This should start off as a web application that operates locally. But
someone could put it on the Internet.

How about a specification targeted for 0.2 that will be about a review

--long-options and ensuring consistency ? (

What do you think about something like

--duplicates -100 (at most 100 duplicates)
--duplicates 3-6 (at least 3 and at most 6 duplicates)

Of course a short option would also be great for this.

Message-ID: <45B82EAA.6020101@gmail.com>

Hi,

There was one suggestion for this that I know of, but I can't respond to
it bc I erased thatmessage.

I have no problem with us being subscribed to important Ubuntu bugs (or
important bughelper bugs) but I think a new group should be formed by
those interested in this important tool and the bughelper bug-emails
should go to that group.

I started loosing the bugs I subscribed to because of the overflow of
bughelper bugs about which I can do nothing bc I don't know how to
program (like others in this list I believe). I don't even know how to
use it...

If you form a new group, we won't loose subscribers (people will
unsubscribe if the email traffic keeps going this high).

Thanks.

I don't want to argue about that, just think that dot directories are

Hellos!!!

I'm sitting in Oslo with the rest of the Distro team, where we're
hacking on the Sprint. We've been working hard on Feisty and next
Wednesday is a good time to hoover up some stray bugs.

So on 31 January 2007, in all timezones, we'll be meeting in
#ubuntu-bugs on irc.freenode.net for another Ubuntu Bug Day.
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBugDay

We'll be helping bugs without a home find the packages they belong to:
    http://tinyurl.com/23wap8

We'll be accepting people into Ubuntu QA:
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuQA

And we'll be doing our usual bug triage:
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs

If you're interested in helping, please stop by. And feel free to ask
bdmurray, dholbach, and the rest of the team for ways to help out.

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

When triaging mozilla bugs can you please refer to the pages listed
below. There are alot of bugs related to Mozilla and we (the
mozillateam) are working on getting them cleaned up and assigned to the
right packages. Not all firefox bugs are caused by firefox. If you are
not sure how to tell the difference btween a firefox bug and java or
flash or any other extension causing the problem please read the links
provided.
We made the mozilla team for this reason and we are working hard to
triage the bugs. I have had a few complaints that bugs are not being
assigned to the right packages and are not being triaged correctly and
causing double ---> triple the work for the team. This is why the pages
below are important to triaging mozilla bugs.

I hope that this is not considers poaching;)

A fair amount of the issues reported against firefox are actually jvm
related. I was wondering if there is anyone on the bug squad who is
interested in focusing on jvm related issues.

The issues can be pretty complicated so it would be a great place for a
triager to refine his skills;)

Thanks

Hello everybody,

Henrik and I moved over bugs and discussions to a new mailing list,
called bughelper at lists.ubuntu.com

I didn't move over subscribers, so please head to
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/bughelper and subscribe
yourself.

The Bughelper team will provide weekly updates to this list, so you'll
stay tuned on new features being introduced.

Thanks a lot, have a nice day,
 Daniel

Hi Daniel,
What's the premise? To keep the day-to-day volume on this list down?
Or is the intention to migrate to that list?

If the former, OK; if the latter, I'm heading over. :)

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Daniel,

Whatever the reason that initialy motivated the idea of moving discussions
on bughelper to another mailing list, I think it's a great idea because the
amount of emails regarding development of this tool went out of proportions
and it is slightly off topic for the bugsquad mailing list. However, it
would be great to have an update once in a while (perhaps once a week or so)
on the new features and the overall status of the project as it appears to
be a tool that helps many people on the bugsquad.

Thanks again for the new mailing list!

Math

Both. The volume was too high for some of the team and all bughelper
related discussions will on that list for now.

Have a nice day,

Excellent, thank you so much (the idea of providing weekly updates is
great) :)

Thanks for your reply. When I read your message, I read "bughelper" as
"bugsquad", which is what confused me. It's all clear now, and I
appreciate you moving the list. :)

I'm having a nice day; you too!

Message-ID: <daf11bd20701280000x27e62355se1d71e9830b1bdc1@mail.gmail.com>

Greetings!

I just added a canned response to the
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses page (very handy reference, by
the way) with regards to kernel bugs. Basically a summary of
information requested on the kernel debugging wiki page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems and a request to set
the bug to "Needs Info" rather than "Rejected".

It seemed to me like this was a special enough case under the "not
described well" category to warrant a separate entry. Since kernel
bugs are obviously very important, I wanted to solicit your
comments/suggestions; and please feel free to edit/revert my addition
as you see fit.

Thanks everyone!

I'd like to target this showstopper bug, but I don't know how
to do it (or I don't have enough rights):

cdromupgrade script on feisty CD has edgy CODENAME
  https://launchpad.net/bugs/77620

This bug makes cdromupgrade script of no use in herd-2.

Hi,

I came across an interesting thought in the ISO testing forum --
step-by-step instructions on filing a good bug, perhaps even a video.
(CCing Alan Pope, our video Guru)

Quote: ... However I am still kinda afraid submitting a new bug. It's
not that I will say something stupid or submit a duplicate bug (almost
inevitable, since searching if a bug exists already or is a duplicate
seems to be more an art than a science if you are new to linux), but
mainly that I am not sure that the bug is worth posting and that it can
be confirmed by others. Perhaps a "worked example" of a real bug being
reported could help. E.g. a real story written by an experienced tester
who finds a bug and reports it in the proper way, following the howto
step by step, would be invaluable (a video of the process would be awesome).

Henrik,

The doc team is working on some videocasts over at
ubuntu-doc at lists.ubuntu.com I would think that they would be a helpful
resource on this. Sorry, I can't remember any of the details.

A link to this videocast at the top of the the launchpad/bugs would seem
appropriate.

Thanks

An excellent idea. We have a page [0] where you can specify what Screencasts you would like to see made. Once added someone (possibly
you) can add a specification from which a video can be made.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers,
Al.
