Marcos,

Sim, já tentei...
também dpkg lcdproc-extra-drivers --configure

nada feito.

Também dei uma olhada no arquivo:
sudo leafpad /var/lib/locales/supported.d/local
O conteudo anterior (versao 11.10) era
"LANG="pt_BR"
LANGUAGE="pt_BR:pt:en"
LC_MESSAGES="pt_BR.UTF-8"
LC_CTYPE="pt_BR.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="pt_BR.UTF-8"
LC_ALL="pt_BR.UTF-8"pt_BR.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8"

Depois do 12.04 passou para
"pt_BR.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8"

em algum lugar eu pesquisei e coloquei...
"LANGUAGE = "pt_BR:en",
LC_ALL = "pt_BR.UTF-8"LC_NUMERIC="pt_BR",
LC_TIME = "pt_BR",
LC_MONETARY = "pt_BR",
LC_CTYPE = "pt_BR.UTF-8",
LC_COLLATE = "pt_BR.UTF-8",
LC_ADDRESS = "pt_BR",
LC_TELEPHONE = "pt_BR",
LC_MESSAGES = "pt_BR.UTF-8",
LC_NAME = "pt_BR",
LC_MEASUREMENT = "pt_BR",
LC_PAPER = "pt_BR",
LANG = "pt_BR.UTF-8""

e também executei

sudo locale-gen pt_BR.UTF-8 en_US.UTF-8 && sudo locale-gen --purge &&
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

nada feito...
