Flávio você está usando o hardy certo?

O xmms foi removido no hardy, por estar extremamente desatualizado, parece
que o desenvolvimento parou e etc.

Foi o por isso que o Notrev ainda conseguiu instalar no Gutsy, porque ele
ainda existir no Gutsy...

Mas o que fazer?

Bom, a primeira sugestão é trocar de player, para um bem parecido e mais
atualizado, e poucas pessoas discordam disso:
audacious

*sudo apt-get install audacious*

(Talvez você queira instalar mais algumas coisas que ele oferece, mas aí
deixo para você dar um procurada e ver se te interessa)

Na minha opinião é a melhor alternativa, ele bem melhor que o xmms em vários
sentidos, muito embora continue parecido no geral.

Essa aqui eu ainda não testei, mas olhando na lista de pacotes eu vi.
Se você ainda quer insistir no xmms, tem o xmms2 mas eu francamente não sei
como as coisas estão, então não recomendo.
Eu vi que você tentou instalar o xmms2, mas sentiu falta da interface
gráfica. Eu ACHO que assim você vai conseguir tê-la:

*sudo apt-get install gxmms2*
