Hi,

I found the problem: it was of my own making.
I had edited
    /etc/default/bluetooth
to include a call to hidd, according to
   http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/hardware-peripherals/126054-enable-bluetooth-keyboard-boot.html
Removing this file solved the problem, and I can now connect to the device at start-up, which was as I recall the reason for the change in the first place.

Closing report!

** Changed in: bluez (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid
