Probably caused by an upgrade somewhere. I fixed this by:
Uninstalled gnome-bluetooth package.
Got gnome.org sources and did a configure/make/make install : bluetooth applet worked as expected.
Did a make uninstall on gnome.org sources and reinstalled package : bluetooth appled still worked as expected.
I assume whatever was causing the problem (maybe an outdated config
file?) got removed during the uninstall.
