I presented briefly Ubuntu 11.10 last tuesday at the monthly LinuxBabbel (
www.linuxbabbel.be) @ Izegem (20 people attended), gave away 4 cd's...
Someone came through via the Support Point system
Cons:
- Banshee 'locked' 2 times in 2 days (terminal -> kill .... to unblock)
- 'screens' doesn't support nvidia external screen.... nvidia external
settings don't "save" (at reboot) or get used at "login"/"switch user"
screen so that part couldn't be shown on the beamer
- on one laptop the "usb" stick didn't want to work (old acer P4
laptop).... the installation cd showed the name of the intell wireless
instead of the "wireless networks" so there was no "wifi" to get
upgrades.... when running the live cd the "wifi" was greyed out only "lan"
was possible... eg no support out of the box for Intel Wifi ??? in the end
we couldn't install ubuntu on the harddisk...the 40gb ata disc made funny
noises and the "parted" which was going to downsize the XP partition
reported read errors.... user could work (without wifi) from the "cdrom" or
buy a new 2.5 disc somewhere ....the windows XP was also unstable (didn't
want to install the wifi drivers...probably corrupted due to disk errors)
so we could at least say Linux-Windows 0-0 on this one :-)
- Although much was said about 3D necessity... I didn't see any eye candy
active... no transparancy ... I haven't yet searched & enabled
compiz...nvidia was active and beamer was working...me happy
- everything you show has to be made "full screen" to get the title bar
with the options you require (eg personal folder -> big screen -> now you
can connect to a "network" share from the title bar...enable list mode...
show extra panel)
- resolution of beamer was lower as the laptop screen... couldn't get the
sizes to match so the entire desktop never got shown (right upper part got
dropped)
Pro:
- at installation it asks if you want the 3rd party restrictions installed
(mp3...Flash...divx?)
- briefly showed/configured the "ubuntu one" cloud... advertised the 5gbyte
free online cloud storage and how to put stuff on it ... "dropbox"
alternative (but no windows clients I believe?)
- big bucks bunny (1080) ogg and sintel 1080 mkv video's worked good out of
the box (VLC was used btw...I believe I had to install it because the totem
player allways showed the video on the primary (laptop) screen in my tests
the day before ...but as my nvidia settings never got saved at the demo I
configured it as an absolute screenover instead of a twinview screen next
to the primary)..... the resident Blender expert was happy to see them on
the big screen...
