I have done some minor Drupal (contrib) patches (D5), however I'm no PHP 
expert at all. But looking at the functionality we need, I think most of 
it can be done with existing Drupal modules.

Nodeprofile is great indeed: http://drupal.org/project/nodeprofile. I 
have to verify the following, but since profiles are nodes (if we go 
with nodeprofile), then their content is indexed by Drupal's core search.

If profile nodes are searchable, this is solved.

I'll have a look at this. If I'm not mistaken, stuff like this has been 
done before with Drupal.
