I guess I've read that so many times over the last 6 years that I'm
surprised you never heard about it. :-)

Why do you think there is always a "free" copy of software from one of
the large anti-virus companies with only a 1 to 3 months subscription
included, while this software is proven to be the worst over and over
again? Several other and *much* better antivirus companies already
offer their software (almost) for free, and with cheaper subscription
schemes.

If Packard Bell or one of the other well-known consumer brands (or very
large supermarket house-brands like Walmart's) include your software
exclusively, a relatively large number of buyers will buy yearly
subscriptions if after those 3 months you show them a dialog with "your
computer is at great risk now, please click here to buy a new
subscription and be safe again".

(You can call this an extreme case of "razor & blade marketing".)

I'm not sure this happens in Belgium, because we're a small market and
because I'm not sure if this is actually allowed by law, but it sure
happens in the US and the UK and many other countries...
