Yes you're talking about Binary Blob. This is somewhat necessary to 
ensure the out-of-the-box experience the users seek. They care less 
about free and open source which doesn't get any real work done (most of 
the typical users have athreos wlan on their laptop whose driver is not 
open source). Several variants of BSD (OpenBSD is the one that I'm 
recalling ATM, but I'm pretty sure there are others) removes all sort of 
blobs , but this cost greatly on the hardware efficiency.
