GNOME and are KDE are two different Desktop Environments. If you are still
confused about GNOME and KDE or Ubuntu and Kubuntu, you can read this
article<http://ovroniil.wordpress.com/2010/04/17/%E0%A6%AC%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%81-%E0%A6%AC%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%AF%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B2%E0%A6%BF%E0%A7%9F%E0%A6%A8/>.
KMplayer is made for KDE, so if you want to install it in UBuntu, it will
install lots of things in ubuntu which are not available in GNOME by
default.
If you want Ubuntu, and you want to play almost any kind of file format,
then VLC player is perfect for you. You can install VLC Player in GNOME
environment with less effort. Otherwise there is GNOME MPlayer (MPlayer for
GNOME).
