Hello Slaven,

Let's try another routine just before reinstalling the system.

Step 1:
----------
Select "recovery mode" in GRUB while booting. If Ubuntu is the only OS and
don't show the GRUB by default, press ESC during boot.

Step 2:
---------
Select root shell from the item menu.

Step 3:
----------
Now the crucial part. As you already mentioned that you have uninstalled
both fglrx and radeon, (was it xserver-xorg-video-radeon ?). Let's try to
reconfig the xserver. That will need a set of commands. Execute them one
after one.

1. sudo sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
2. sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
3. exit

Then the reboot the PC at normal state.

NOTE:
As far as I know, ATI Radeon cards needs 'xserver-xorg-video-radeon' for
video display. If you have uninstalled that, it can be the reason of this
kind of problem.

And please not forget to report back if this trick works successfully.

Peace,
