[Ubuntu-BD] Could not start X server

its a dedicated mailing list for Ubuntu, not Linux mint.

Although both are similar platform. you are encouraged to post in blua mailing 
list which covers such matter.

now onto the problem I don't have much knowledge on Mint system

did you try dropping to root shell and start gdm?

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
