Can you try leaving the refresh rate to "auto" and see if that fixes it?

I know very little about the command line linux like editing xorg.conf
or something like that. I opened the xorg.conf file, but everything
seems obscure to me...

Anyway, I have changed the resolution by NVidia Display Settings menu
which appeared after installing the proprietory driver. But the screen
seems to be flickering. I used to run windows xp/vista with the same
settings 1024x768,32bit,60Hz
