I tried building the backports via my PPAs at:
https://launchpad.net/~romandas/+archive/git-backport (from Raring to Precise)
and
https://launchpad.net/~romandas/+archive/git--quantal-backport (from Quantal to Precise).
The i386 packages built successfully; the amd64 packages failed. When I
tried to install the amd64 binary packages from Raring and Quantal, dpkg
complained that the packages would break bash-completion.
I was able to successfully compile and test (make, make test) the
1.8.0.1 source from upstream using only the packages provided in the
Precise package repository for its dependencies.
