After reading comments here tried to find a newer version and compile it.
was lucky with the latest version using qt3. this is qps 1.9.21.
Got it from

no problem to compile on my eeepc 1000HE running jaunty unr. 
latest qt4 version compiles with no errors, but segfaults too.
