It's certainly a nice idea, and my project team would like it too. But
it's guaranteed to cause lots of breakage.

We've found few problems with running the production system on Hardy
with 2.5, and dev systems with Jaunty and 2.6. You just have to watch
the test suite and sometimes implement version-specific workarounds...
