Yes, the bug still exists as the new version of Network manager applet
that includes the fix has *not* been backported to Ubuntu.

I've filed a backport request in intrepid backports two months ago, but nothing has happened since. The request is located in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317514

So everything needed to fix the issue would be someone to kindly do the
backport.

P.S. Is the status of this bug supposed to be "fix released", as it's
not released in Ubuntu?
