There is a lot of requests for this.
I personally run a VPS with dapper, and want PHP v5.2 for some PECL packages, and as per http://www.gophp5.org/ there is a big push for a lot of Open Source PHP programs to be using 5.2 of PHP. Some projects, such as Drupal aren't supporting PHP v5.1 anymore.

The alternatives of compiling from source or pulling it from a later
dist isn't exactly the best option to try on a working production
server.

I can't dist-upgrade at the moment, nor should I need to when using a
LTS version of Ubuntu only because the version of PHP is the one
released on the 12th Jan 2006. Which is OVER 3 YEARS OLD!
