[Bug 277353] [NEW] Please backport python 2.6

Public bug reported:

Python v2.6 was released on October 1, 2008.  This is meant to be
backwards compatible to v2.5 code aside from some modules being removed
from standard library and helps in preparing for the release of python
3.
