I don't have much experience on how stable glib is between releases
however the 2.15.6 release announcement states that 2.15 and 2.16 will
be backwards compatible to 2.14. The new releases only add new features.

"GLib 2.16 will be source and binary compatible with
the GLib 2.14 series. The new API in GLib should be
stable at this point; but there may still be
incompatibilities between this release and the final
2.16 release."

However I agree that backporting such a core library might be a bad
idea.
