I think there is 2 problems :
- icon cache not properly update when awn-manager is installed. It's only a problem if you installed a version from source, installed in /usr/local.
- awn-manager not automatically installed when you installed avant-window-naviagtor. 

Could you try to install the packages in my PPA
(https://edge.launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive) and see if the problem is
still here, there is possible fix for the 2 problems ?

Also, if it's need specific Hardy changes, the backport is still
possible ? If yes, I guess it needs a 0ubuntu-1 version and a proper
diff ?
