My reason was that the reshape library [1] depends on plyr [2], and they
were not available with the official Hardy versions. But they work fine
with backported Intrepid.

Just try: install.packages("reshape")

sorry, but my english is not good enough to find out the meaning of
"intreperator". I always found R rather stable, especially I never had
backward compatibility problems, if this is what you are affraid of.
