[Bug 127014] Please backport git-core 1.5

Originally discussed in bug #111966 but in there I was adviced to create
a new more general bug (the original got sort of abandoned).

Reason for backporting:
Git-core 1.5.x ships with numerous bug fixes and new features. it's also the feature currently used in linux kernel development.

git-1.5.2.3 builds on Feisty fine.
