Backporting Ruby 1.8.2

Bug # 12613 on Bugzilla is a bug that I would love to fix, however I'm
pretty new to packaging for Ubuntu (Hoary). Is there anyone currently
fixing the issues regarding the Ruby 1.8.2 beta package? Debian has a
final version of Ruby 1.8.2 which I think could be backported. Is
there any FAQ's or pages out there on the web describing the process
of backporting debian packages to Ubuntu?
