I have been having fun - and SOME success - trying
to get Ubuntu to work with my dialup modem. As suggested by Help > Dialup
Modems, I obtained the required download from linmodems.org and after
"floundering around in the dark" on the command line, I eventually got it
to run its diagnostics and shoot out a report. This was copied to disk,
transfered to Outlook Express and sent to their Discussion address. I recieved
two e-mails back from different members of that org with some questions and
suggestions - and more commands to type in.

At this point I knew my printer had some jets
blocked that refused to clear, leaving parts of print-outs missing. This caused
me to miss a space in one of the commands and it failed.

Diced the printer, bought a new one that was
specifically listed as Linux compatible and installed it successfully.

Reprinted the e-mails - picked up the space - ran
the commands on Ubuntu successfully - and identified and tested the modem.
Even dialing out to my ISP - once only! I had a pleasant surprise when booting
up again Ubuntu dialed out to my ISP! So I had access to my e-mail and web to
begin with - but not, once it was switched off. It didnt switch back on
again.

I have gleefully reported this to linmodems as
requested and now await their answer - with hopefully the means to
switch the link between the mail and internet applications in Ubuntu
to the outside world, when and if I want them.

Thank you all for your interest.
