Sorry Paul. I wrote down exactly  as you said and then typed something 
different and illogical.
Here is the latest result from Terminal:

This makes interesting reading. The error report surfaced about a week 
ago when I tried to install a mathematical application called Octave 
which I had previously used with an earlier version of Ubuntu. Later I 
found the same error when updating.
