12.04 problem

If I put the mouse over the white space where I know a menu or control is the software reacts appropriately but it is flying blind.  Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

if it is 12.10 try running 12.04
or try running 12.10 if running 12.04
sometimes newer version fix bugs other time they reintroduce bugs[1]
