installing xubuntu on Acer Veriton 2800

I am attempting to install xubuntu 10.04 on Acer Veriton 2800
the live CD (10.04) stalls/crash just before the gui loads, but the mouse cursor is displayed

i've just left the computer on, the monitor went into power saving mode
when I move the mouse the xubuntu background image is displayed, but with no menu bar
