DigiKam

I have loaded DigiKam on my laptop (Ubuntu 10.10) but the program will not
open.
I removed it and re-installed it using the software centre & it says it is
installed - but it still doesn't open.
I see now that it is a KDE program - does that mean it will not work in
Ubuntu, or am I not installing it correctly?
Is there a better recommened program for Ubuntu - for viewing and
manipulating photos.
