Update manager oddness

Here's a strange thing:

I just ran Update manager to install some updates, and I got a warning that
some updates couldn't be verified.

OK, I can accept that, except ... among the things that couldn't be verified
were Synaptic and Update manager! wtf?

Anyone know what causes this? Am I missing something in apt config?

(I seem to recall that some sources were turned off when I update to Lynx.)
