Another software option could be unRAID from Lime Tech

http://www.lime-technology.com/

There is a free version that you can use (allows 3 drives) that you can
have a play with to see if it will suit your needs then possibly (if
needed) update to other versions provided. (No I'm not a representative
for Lime Tech)

Its a Slax variation of Linux that the default NAS protocol is to use
samba file sharing (designed to work fairly seamlessly with windows
clients)

So maybe another option to consider...
