Check which driver you are using for the printer - make sure it is PCL, 
not PostScript (PS).  The LJ 1200 supports PS, but it is slow due to its 
rather under-powered CPU.

You can check your drivers and loads of other cool stuff at 
http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/ - choose your printer then select 
Administration -> Modify Printer, then Continue through the pages until 
you get to the model selection screen, and choose the recommended driver 
(pxlmono).  If that one is already selected, choose another 
non-PostScript ones.
