You may well find that if you install the "usb-modeswitch" package it
will just work.

Many of the USB 3G modems have the Windows and Mac software installed
on them, ready for installation. Once the driver is installed, it
knows how to do the switch.

On my Ubuntu 10.04 box, simply installing "usb-modeswitch" allowed my
Telstra supplied Sierra Wireless USB 308 to just work with Network
Manager.
