Hi Paul,

Thanks for the input, much appreciated. 

I have noted that BIOS attempts to load the OS from the hard drive first
but can not find an anonymous file it is looking for, so goes the CD.

'Embeded' LAN does not appear in any of the setup pages, although the
cable test is good.

lspci > lspci-data.txt interestingly produced what looked like the man
page for the command first time up. Playing around lost that and
re-starting the terminal and that command did not repeat it. 

However, lspci by itself produced the output below (transfer via USB
stick). Ethernet Controller in the last line but one maybe what you are
looking for and can suggest a method of making it operational.
