One way that ClamAV can be used to benefit a desktop user is in
conjunction with HAVP (HTTP Anti-Virus Proxy).  You can install it on a
desktop system, point your browser at it, and surf with virus scanning
enabled.  I've done a bit of playing with it in the past and it seemed
to work, although i can't comment on its long-term viability.
