Remote notification of reboot required?

Hi folks,

Is there a way i can tell without logging in on the console if an
automatic update on a Hardy desktop system requires a reboot?  I have a
desktop machine in a remote office that i usually access via ssh, and
i'd like to check to see if an update has triggered the "reboot
required" flag.
