emails open as attachments?

There are two tabs in Preferences for fonts. "Display" (for how you want
incoming fonts to appear) and "Composition" (fonts to use in outgoing
messages). Make sure you're using setting the Composition fonts only.

By the way, the Comic Sans font is only installed by default on Windows,
so in general only Windows users will see your choice of font.
