Dial tone problems

Hi,
many thanks for all the answers,
finally got his machine here, and used my connection to install gnome-ppp
Using this to set up his connection, and removing the tick in "Wait for 
dial tone", connection was successful.
Seems this problem occurs with Telstra prepaid services. Working towards 
another convert, as his xp started doing strange things, now seems very 
happy with Ubuntu. Now 3 of us in town using it, so don't feel like the 
only smart body in town :-)   Only 700 to go.
