Ubuntu 6.1 Kernel Panic

Hi All,

I have recently reinstalled 6.1. It used to work well
before I upgraded to 7.04.Because 7.04 had a lot of the codecs
and proprietary software which 6.1 had, removed, I went back to 6.1.

The problem I have with 6.1 is this error message:

" Kernel panic-not synching : IO + timer doesn't work.
Boot with APIC = Debug and send report.
Then try booting with the "Noapic" option."

The bootup stops at this point.

What does this message mean, and how do I get around it?

I have tried what the message suggests, but to no avail.

My computer cpu is an AMD 64 X2 3200 with 3Gb of RAM.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Thank you in anticipation.

Regards

John
