external lcd's on laptop

hi guys
i've got a vaio running gutsy - it has an intel 915 chipset.  I'd like
to be able to plug in an external screen and be able to xinerama to it,
or at least clone or run a second x server on it... god forbid, even
switch between these modes...  all hopefully with out having to change
xorg.confs and/or restarting X 

Any idea if this is possible at all? I'e gota get this sorted before all
my Mac touting ruby on rails buddies catch me out.
