New problem:
No sound.  Error message "No volume control GS Streamer plugins or  devices found"  I have loaded Alsamixergui but that didn't help.  The soundcard is an Intel on- board for the 845G chipset.  Much hysterical research on the Web tells me this is a common problem.  Solutions are aplenty but seem to involve interceding in the software.  I believe that I may need to install a driver based on "AC 97"?

I am sure there's a simple solution.  It seems fundamental somehow.
