USB powered 2.5' on USB hub

Hi all,
I have a self-powered USB hub (Bekin http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=159070)
to connect some of my USB devices. On the service page I can read that the hub provides 500mA per port
(http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5U100&aid=1286&scid=1).

By now I only used it for memory sticks and my 3.5' HDD so the current/power provided by the hub was not an issue.

I bought myself one of those pocket drives 2.5' FreeAgent to have less wires to carry. The drive came with one Y-cable to
use. one plug for power and the other for power and data. this makes sense to me as I've heard that one USB port can be
insufficient for a whole drive, esp on a NB.

My question is, as the hub is powered is it ok to use a 'normal' UCB cable. (I could leave the other at work or in the
bag...).
I tried to find out how much current the drive draws but hat no luck yet.
