My objective to simply to achieve similar functionality to what I have with Windows. I realise that there are many substitutes for the usual Microsoft products. But I am concerned, for instance, about emulating Quicken which I have been using for some years.

I then upgraded - (I thought) to Ubuntu 7.10. Now I come across information about "Kubutu" and don't know if I should be going for that?

It depends mostly on how much RAM you have. If you have less than 512MB,
I'd reccomend Xubuntu for a smoother experience. Otherwise, just go for
regular Ubuntu. Kubuntu is nice, but it's not as good.
As for your printer, try googling it and ubuntu - we can't magically
read what type of printer you have!
As for Quicken, you _may_ be able to run it under WINE. Otherwise, there
are programs like Gnucash and KMyMoney that could fill the gap.
