I don't know about the cost (it might be more expensive than what
you're after) but the Brother MFC-8420 is a network enabled
printer/scanner/fax that was automatically detected by Feisty as a
printer, and has a scan to email/ftp option. (It would be nice to have
'print to fax' but with email these days I haven't needed it.)
Similarly, the Brother HL-2700CN, which is a networked colour laser
was also auto-detected by Feisty.
So.. with a sample of 2, modern 'Brother' printers seem to play nice.
Maybe you can drag a laptop to Officeworks and give their MFP's a
test. (Hmm.. that sounds like fun.)
