Hi Karl
I deleted the metacity sessions files again and removed kdm, then tried
to re-install gdm. I got this error message.
grep: /etc/X11/Default-display-manager: No such file or directory
*Reloading GNOME Display Manager configuration
*Changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action "reload" failed
so I restarted the PC and got the same result. Just a black screen with
a swirly waiting cursor.
I then booted into recover mode and started x as root (i had no choice),
and ran "ls -lAh ~\ | more" and this is the result.
