The place to look is the display driver archive in the linux driver section of
nvidia.com. There is a 'supported products list' but it always seems to lag
behind. Each new driver release shows which cards they added support for. The
release notes for driver version 100.14.03 show this -
Added support for GeForce 8600 GTS, GeForce 8600 GT, GeForce 8500 GT, GeForce
8400 GS, and GeForce 8300 GS
I would say that your card is supported from this driver onwards. Even though
the absolute *exact* model is slightly different, it's the series number
(8800 8400 etc.) which matters more than anything. For instance, I have a
7950 GT, and this card was supported as soon as the 7900 series was (the 7950
GT is just a hotted up 7900).
Trouble is, you won't be able to install this recent driver version from the
Ubuntu repositories. You will need to build it yourself using the package
available at nvidia.com . A widely used guide on how to do it is available at
http://albertomilone.com/latest_nvidia_udsf_feisty.html .
If you haven't done this before it can be a little daunting. Another option
therefore is to wait until Gutsy comes out, which will have a recent nvidia
driver that is more easily installed.
