Failing hardware, what diagnostics tools are good?

Thanks for the advice Liam.
I gave UBCD a go and whilst it does a great job at working out what my
system comprised of, I couldn't really find an included tool that
probes either the CPU or the motherboard in a testing type manner.
I hope your not right with your comment about memory, but it could
well be that I had a dodgy moment and both modules in the PC got fried
(and the one in my wardrobe got to zapped by my nylon underwear or
something).
Anyways, fingers crossed.
